Today my ASL class went to see Pride and Prejudice. Not only did this have nothing to do with ASL, this had absolutely nothing to do with school at all, not one of my classes is working with this time period, this author, this book, or anything even close to a good reason.
Thankfully that did not stop my favorite teacher of all time Ms. Glass from pulling us all out of school, taking us out to coffee, and watching a good play. Though I had no background to what the play was supposed to be about, I very much enjoyed it, even the wordiness of it.
After a day at coffee shop, and playhouse, we all walked down to the Erie art Museum. I had never been there, and it was actually an extremely enjoyable time.
One of the pieces of art was called a Sand Mandala. This was the only kind of art that honestly has taken me aback a bit... It's an entire.. painting? I guess. Only entirely of sand. I don't know if you've ever tried to make anything out of colored sand? But it sucks.
The entire thing is typically made outside.. watched by thousands of people. If one gust of breeze goes by and messes it up at all, they scrap the whole thing. The entire time they meditate on life, death, peace, and the fragility of all things. When a mandala is ruined, intentional, or accidental, the monks are trained to show no emotion. Kind of like the guards in the red suits who everyone makes funny faces at? Only these guys spend thousands of hours on a piece of art.
Kids at the museum were messing with his Mandala, it took him thousands of hours, and all he did was smile. I need to learn that kind of acceptance and patience. Oh so here is a couple pictures of what they look like, keep in mind they are entirely sand.. http://www.artnetwork.com/Mandala/gallery.html
